Alcohol Allergy: Symptoms and Causes of the Reaction

We explain how alcohol allergy manifests, what alcohol hives and a reaction to alcohol look like, what allergens there can be, and when a doctor is needed.

A glass of wine at a celebration — and soon your face is burning and a rash appears on your skin. Such symptoms can appear after contact with an allergen. We explain how alcohol allergy manifests, how it differs from other reactions to alcohol, and when it is time to see a doctor.

What allergy is and how it differs from other reactions

Allergy is the immune system's reaction to something that does not harm most people: pollen, dust, foods, medications, insect bites. The immune system raises a false alarm even though there is no real threat. Similar symptoms occur not only with allergy — for example, with intolerance — so a doctor must determine the cause.

  • Allergy is the immune system's response to a substance that does not cause a reaction in most people.
  • People with allergies are often sensitive not to one substance but to several.
  • Allergy can manifest as a runny nose, a skin rash, swelling, or an asthma attack.

Symptoms: how alcohol hives manifest

A rash and itching are the most noticeable sign, but not the only one. An allergic reaction can look like raised rash, that is, hives, or like redness and itching of the skin; redness is harder to notice on dark skin than on light skin. At the same time there may be a runny nose and sneezing, red or watery eyes, pain or tenderness around the cheeks, eyes, and forehead. Cough, wheezing, and shortness of breath, swelling of the eyes, lips, mouth, or throat, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and bloating are cause for concern.

Hives by itself is not a reason to call an ambulance. 103 or 112 are needed if the lips, mouth, throat, or tongue suddenly swell; breathing becomes very rapid or labored, wheezing appears, or there is a feeling of suffocation; the throat tightens or swallowing is difficult; the skin, tongue, or lips turn blue, gray, or pale; the person suddenly becomes confused, drowsy, or dizzy; they faint and do not come round. These are signs of a severe reaction, anaphylaxis, which requires immediate help in a hospital.

Allergy to beer, wine, vodka, and cognac: what the doctor assesses

Among allergens there are food ones — for example, nuts, milk, and eggs; pollen, dust, animals, insect bites, and some medications also occur. If symptoms appear after beer, wine, vodka, or cognac, a doctor must assess the reaction and its cause: they may prescribe skin tests and blood tests.

Possible causes of an allergic reaction

Allergy is based on a false alarm of the immune system: it reacts to a substance that does not harm most people. Both genes and the environment probably play a role in the development of allergy.

How soon allergy symptoms appear and pass

Symptoms of an allergic reaction can appear within minutes or several hours after contact with the allergen. How quickly the reaction passes depends on its severity and on the individual: the doctor assesses the timeframe.

When to see a doctor

If a reaction to alcohol has recurred, that is a reason to see a doctor: they may prescribe an examination or refer you to a specialized allergy center. The available tools include skin tests, when a small amount of allergen is applied to the skin and the response is observed, blood tests, and a diagnostic test with a gradual increase in the amount of the product under supervision. Based on the results, the doctor draws up a plan for living with the allergy.
